Hospice Eligibility Criteria for COPD & Other Lung Diseases

Someone typically meets the COPD hospice criteria when their physician or specialist certifies that they have six months or less to live if their disease follows its natural course. However, do not wait for your physician to bring up hospice care. Be a persistent healthcare advocate and inquire about hospice care sooner rather than later. Earlier access to hospice care ensures that you can experience the many benefits of this extra layer of support. Families always tell Samaritan they wished they called us sooner.

Other advanced lung diseases that may qualify for hospice

While COPD is one of the most common diagnoses associated with hospice care, Medicare eligibility may also apply to patients with other progressive lung diseases when their life expectancy is estimated to be six months or less and they experience significant functional decline.

When to call hospice for COPD patients

Hospice may be appropriate when COPD leads to increasing shortness of breath, frequent hospital stays, recurring respiratory infections, greater oxygen dependence, significant weakness, weight loss, or a growing need for help with daily activities. It may also be time to consider hospice when treatments are no longer providing meaningful relief or when the patient decides to prioritize comfort and quality of life.

A hospice evaluation can help determine whether the patient meets COPD hospice eligibility criteria and what support may be available.

Contact Samaritan for a COPD hospice care

If you or a loved one is living with advanced COPD or another serious lung disease, Samaritan can help determine whether hospice care is appropriate. The hospice team will review the patient’s diagnosis, recent decline, breathing difficulties, oxygen needs, hospitalizations, and overall functional status.
